What are modern foreign languages (MFL)?
Modern foreign languages include any living language taught and learned in a country where that language is not the dominant one. In a globalised world, multilingualism is a major asset in international business, diplomacy, and travel.

At induction meetings towards the end of Year 6 students will have the opportunity to select either French or Spanish. This is the subject they will then study throughout KS3 and we hope into KS4.

The French curriculum promotes a love of learning and fosters independence in students. Through engaging, inspiring, and challenging activities, students develop their literacy skills and become more confident in speaking French. Each topic is designed so students understand the functionality of the language, leading onto students becoming fluent within the topic area.
french KS3 - KS4
As student’s progress through the school they will increase in confidence in being able to talk about themselves and the world around them. Additionally, the French curriculum goes beyond academic skills and encourages students to think about languages and culture in a wider context, the course equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to make meaningful contributions to the subject and the wider world.

Spanish learning helps us engage with the world around us, communicate effectively, problem solve and empathise. At Orion Eden Park, we encourage our Spanish learners to be inquisitive, take risks and be creative.

The focus at KS3 is on building foundational language skills through engaging, age-appropriate topics. These include: Greetings and introductions, Numbers, days, and months, School subjects and routines, Family and pets, Food and drink. There is a focus on grammar and structure in our writing and a build up of all 4 component skills which supports students transition to KS4..
