OUR english CURRICULUM

What is English?

English is the study of language, literature, and communication. It encompasses understanding and using words, stories, and ideas to express thoughts, convey meaning, and explore the world around us. Through English, students learn skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, which are essential for effective communication.

At Eden Park High, our English curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong appreciation for reading, speaking, and writing through both creative and analytical approaches. Our goal is to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in any career they choose, while fostering a love for language and literature that transcends the classroom.

We are committed to supporting all students, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds and those less inclined toward reading, by creating an inclusive environment that encourages growth and curiosity. Our curriculum challenges students to think critically about a range of social and cultural topics, nurturing their curiosity about diverse cultures and practices beyond their own experiences.

Through exposure to a broad array of texts and contexts, we strive to build cultural capital while also cultivating the simple joy of reading for pleasure. As dedicated English educators, we aim to instill a passion for literature that empowers students to become independent, discerning readers, writers, and speakers. We encourage them to write with a clear sense of audience and provide meaningful opportunities for them to publish and share their work, developing their and beyond the classroom.

english at KS3

At KS3 English is taught in mixed ability groups. We believe English lends itself well to differentiated tasks within the same classroom. Teachers can design activities that allow students to engage at different levels of complexity, providing challenge for more advanced students while offering support for those who need it, without the need to split classes based on ability.

English at KS4

At Eden Park, our primary aim is to support all students in achieving their very best, recognising that a Grade 4 in English is a critical milestone in their educational journey. This grade is often the minimum requirement for entry into colleges, sixth forms, apprenticeship programs, and many employment opportunities. Without it, students may encounter significant barriers to further education and career paths, as many institutions mandate that students retake the English GCSE until they attain at least a Grade 4. We are committed to providing the necessary resources, guidance, and encouragement to help every student reach this important goal, ensuring they have the foundational literacy skills required for success in their future endeavours.

English LITERATURE at KS5

The study of English Literature at A Level helps you to develop a range of subject specific, as well as transferable, skills by encouraging in-depth, critical and contextual thinking in response to a range of literary works. English Literature is a wonderfully creative and critically analytical subject, which traverses movements, eras and writers in its scope. It requires a keen, academic mind, one intellectually open to the big ideas of life and humanity and how writers shape their ideas.
